Last Trip of 2015 Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

I suppose this should have been the last post of 2015, but unfortunately technology can sometimes suck and I had computer problems which took a while to recover from (and more depressingly caused me to lose the last years worth of Lightroom edits). I am usually really good about making sure everything is backed up, but what I had not noticed is that when I last upgraded Lightroom the catalog was being backed up to the same drive that the live one was living on. This is a definite no-no if you end up losing a drive, like I did, and you need to reinstall everything. All the photos were backed up, but the catalog was lost.

Anyway, enough techno-crap...

I like to make at least one pilgrimage a year to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to look and photograph the birds there. This year, Sallie and my friend Nicole went with me. We had a good time, the weather was wonderful, maybe a little warm for December (but hey, there was no snow on the ground, unlike some of my northern family members). I like to go to see my "spirit" bird, the Great Blue Heron. Unfortunately, none were in attendance this day. I have been going there for at least the last ten years and have been noticing that there have been fewer and fewer Great Blues. I wonder if there is something going on with their population in the area. It is getting difficult to find Great Blues anywhere. As always there were lots of Tri-color Herons, some Little Blue Herons, Little Green Herons, and lots of Egrets. I noticed this year that there were a lot more Reddish Egrets around, they used to be quite rare to see.

Since it was warm we went to the Manatee overlook on the intracoastal waterway and were treated to a lot of snouts and tails, there were at least six manatees feeding off the river grass there. The water was pretty murky so not a good place to take photos of them. Maybe if gets cold, I will head out to Blue Springs. To end the visit, it was lunch at Dixie Crossroads, yumm...
