These two images kind of go with the pool series of images that I did over Christmas break.

Shot with a Sony A7rii and 16-35mm lens, plus a lot of time in Photoshop. The stars in the background are actually under water tea lights placed on the bottom of the pool, then digitally enhanced and multiplied (I had about 30 working tea lights to begin with). Special thanks to Ruuben Becker working as my assistant on his trip here from Aruba, and model Tatiana who came up from Satellite to do the shoot.

The first image is titled TRANSITION. The second one DARK ANGEL.

A Day At Ravine Gardens http://daryllabello.com/blog/2017/2/a-day-at-ravine-gardens The original forecast for this last Saturday was supposed to be pretty dicey, with rain sometime during the day. Fortunately, the weather was beautiful. I went on a photo outing with my friend Nicole to Ravine Gardens State Park. It was gorgeous with all the Azaleas and Irises blooming. It was a good day to do some color work with the flowers and some black and white work with the landscapes and man made features in the park.

And of course you have some nice photos of the flowers...

Underwater Drama http://daryllabello.com/blog/2017/1/underwater-drama NOTE: This post contains mild nudity. If this offends you, please go here.

2016 was long and busy year. I did a lot of work for the University, but did not do a whole lot of personal work. Hopefully I can do more in 2017.

This was the last shoot for 2016 and was something I had been wanting to do since the pool was completed earlier in the year. In May, I purchased an underwater housing (Ewa Marine Bag) for my camera so that I can use it in the pool. I have already been using my action cams in their underwater housing to take photos while in the pool (mostly of my cats, who were outside the pool), but now I can take my Sony A7rii and a flash under the water as well. I practiced a few times with flowers to make sure everything would work the way I wanted, but I did not have a model to use as a subject for what I wanted to do.

Luckily in November, I contacted a traveling model, Astrid, who was coming to Florida the last week of December, and she specialized in doing underwater work. The weather was also with me and it was warm and sunny, that made it easier to heat the pool up to above 80 degrees so that everyone would be comfortable.

Astrid was wonderful. I wanted to create images that had both a haunted but peaceful feeling, and I achieved that with the help of her posing expertise in the water.  It may look easy to take underwater photos, but I can tell you it is a lot more difficult than you can imagine. There is very limited time to get the shot while both the photographer and the model are underwater, just a matter of seconds. It takes repetition to achieve good results. Trying to coordinate the camera settings, focus, framing, lighting while wearing a swim mask is really difficult, not to mention the model has to concentrate on posing, facial expression, prop usage, etc.

Taking the photos was just the tip of the iceberg. Post processing was intense. Adjusting the colors, cropping, removal of pool drains were all fairly easy. When you look into a well maintained pool the water looks super clear and clean... until you shoot a light through it... These photos are lit two different ways, the first and the third are lit with an on camera flash, the 2nd and fourth with an Alien Bee strobe on the pool deck triggered with a Pocket Wizard just above the water line. No matter the direction of the light, hundreds of little white specks suddenly show up in the images. Taking them out was the most painful part of the whole process. Each image below has about three hours of post processing time dedicated to them.

Overall I was very happy with the way the images came out and I look forward to trying it again in the near future.

I think this is my favorite shot from the shoot.

Last Trip of 2015 Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge http://daryllabello.com/blog/2016/1/last-trip-of-2015-merritt-island-national-wildlife-refuge I suppose this should have been the last post of 2015, but unfortunately technology can sometimes suck and I had computer problems which took a while to recover from (and more depressingly caused me to lose the last years worth of Lightroom edits). I am usually really good about making sure everything is backed up, but what I had not noticed is that when I last upgraded Lightroom the catalog was being backed up to the same drive that the live one was living on. This is a definite no-no if you end up losing a drive, like I did, and you need to reinstall everything. All the photos were backed up, but the catalog was lost.

Anyway, enough techno-crap...

I like to make at least one pilgrimage a year to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to look and photograph the birds there. This year, Sallie and my friend Nicole went with me. We had a good time, the weather was wonderful, maybe a little warm for December (but hey, there was no snow on the ground, unlike some of my northern family members). I like to go to see my "spirit" bird, the Great Blue Heron. Unfortunately, none were in attendance this day. I have been going there for at least the last ten years and have been noticing that there have been fewer and fewer Great Blues. I wonder if there is something going on with their population in the area. It is getting difficult to find Great Blues anywhere. As always there were lots of Tri-color Herons, some Little Blue Herons, Little Green Herons, and lots of Egrets. I noticed this year that there were a lot more Reddish Egrets around, they used to be quite rare to see.

Since it was warm we went to the Manatee overlook on the intracoastal waterway and were treated to a lot of snouts and tails, there were at least six manatees feeding off the river grass there. The water was pretty murky so not a good place to take photos of them. Maybe if gets cold, I will head out to Blue Springs. To end the visit, it was lunch at Dixie Crossroads, yumm...

Congratulations Aaron and Stephanie http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/11/congratulations-aaron-and-stephanie Congratulations to Aaron and Stephanie Foust on their wedding today.

I am not a wedding photographer, for sure, but Stephanie and I have done a lot of projects together over the past several years so I photographed the formals at the wedding today while my friend Ruuben shot the ceremony and reception.

They had a pretty cool "Day of the Dead" themed wedding at the Mayan Chapel in Maitland Florida. Here are some of the formal and not so formal images. All shot with the Sony A7rII and Zeiss 16-35 lens.

Stephanie Blue Dress http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/10/stephanie-blue-dress I have been working on a video project for the last several weeks concentrating on selfies, narcissism, and voyeurism and these images come from the photo shoot part of that project. Not sure if the video will ever be seen, but we will see...

Had a great time shooting with Stephanie in her blue dress. Shot with the Sony A7r (the mkii was doing video duty) and the Zeiss 24-70 lens.

Spacesuit Pressure Test http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/9/spacesuit-pressure-test Last Friday I had a wonderful opportunity to shoot some researchers at the University pressure testing a space suit in a sub-orbital simulator.  Project POSSUM is putting together a simulator to train astronauts to fly a suborbital space-craft currently in development. This was an interesting test because for the first time they got to test the human factors components of the simulator and see where changes needed to be made in the controls. The subject climbed into the suit and was connected to a pump that pressurized the inside of the suit and provided an air supply. Then into the simulator he went... I can tell you it was hot and cramped in there...

For me, it was a good test of the low light capability of the Sony A7rii. It came through in flying colors. The room was lit only by a red light and no flash could be used. Most images were shot at ISO 3200 to 6400 using the 16-35 FE Zeiss lens. I was really surprised at how well the noise in the images was controlled and easy to clean-up.

Here are some of the 200 images that I shot during the test.

WWII Airplane Close-ups http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/9/wwii-airplane-close-ups I had the opportunity today to go shoot some photos of the University's Waco Bi-plane (these will be used elsewhere so are not published here) and while I was there I shot some close-ups of a couple WWII era aircraft. I was using the 90mm on the Sony A7rII... I have to say the more I use this camera, the more I like it.  Sorry, no wide shots of the entire aircraft. I had my 16-35 with me but the hanger was a little cluttered for wide-angle shots.

Aircraft Engine Part Macros http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/7/aircraft-engine-part-macros Each year I try to do an art series for the University. Last year I did abstract images of various plane body parts. The year before that I did macro images of cockpit instrumentation in the simulators.

This year I decided to do some more macro work. I recently received a new Sony FE 90mm macro lens and wanted to take it out for a spin... I have to say I love this lens, it will probably become my second favorite right after the Zeiss 55 1.8. It is extreme sharp and it handles well. I like how you can switch between autofocus and manual focus with a in/out clutch. Very similar to the Pentax medium format lenses.

Here are the images so far, I am sure I will take more in the upcoming weeks.

New Fine Art Work http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/5/new-fine-art-work Untitled2015 Copyright Daryl LaBello - Registered I have been hard at work the last six months working on my revisited fine art series, Between: Form and Feeling. Here is a look at some of the latest works. Several new techniques have been incorporated into these including long exposure, multiple exposure, and new background options. It has been great to work on this in the new studio where I can go from shooting to reviewing quickly. After a first review and cull, I generally let the series sit a few days to a week before reviewing the images and begin editing.

As always, I am looking for volunteers, so if you are interested in participating, please contact me.

I am very interested in the long/multiple exposure type images as I feel they help communicate the feeling of the image better and include more subtle details for the view to ponder and engage with. I am more torn about the background, the black is great for making the form in the image standout and pop, but the white adds a whole new dimension to the work.

Please feel free to leave me comments or email with your thoughts.

One-on-One Workshop with Anthony Neste http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/5/one-on-one-workshop-with-anthony-neste photograph of female model Emily VeissEmily Veiss I am a little late in getting this up, but recently I had the opportunity to take a one-to-one workshop with a great photographer, Anthony Neste. This is part of my life-long learning obsession, I think there are always new things to learn from other photographers and I am grateful when they are willing to pass on that knowledge.

Anthony is a wonderful photographer who has been in the business for quite a while. He has worked for Sports Illustrated, HBO (he was the set photographer for the Sopranos), and various editorial clients. He now specializes in doing Fashion and Glamor photography.

This was the perfect opportunity for me to pick up some new lighting and posing skills. The workshop consisted of a hands on shoot with a model and make-up artists in various lighting setups and locations. We used a wonderful model from Orlando, Emily Veiss, and make-up artist Tiffany (look up Makeup By Tiffany on Facebook) from Ormond Beach. Emily was a real trooper, even going into a cold pool in the rain. Tiffany gave us several different looks over the day. I would highly recommend her to anyone that was looking for a make-up artist.

We had a great time using various outfits, poses and lighting styles. One of the things I really liked was a Fresnel lens strobe modifier that created a really nice soft spot light effect. I had used Fresnel lens before but on continuous lights, never on strobes. Lets just say I need to start saving my pennies...

Anthony was great, he directed and provided examples of what the various lighting modifiers would do, went over wardrobe selection and recommended accessories for each outfit. After the shoot was over we sat down and went through the complete post processing. It was really refreshing to see how another photographer does their post work.

It was a great day overall with the only downside being that the weather was pretty nasty, cold and rainy so we didn't get to shoot  many outdoor locations. If you are interested in improving your photography skills, I would highly recommend you take one of Anthony's workshops. You will learn a lot and have a great time doing it.

Mrs. American Dream Florida http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/5/mrs-american-dream-florida Everything has been pretty busy over the last few weeks with home and work so I have not gotten to shoot as much as I would like. I will be posting some new art images soon... But first...

I had the opportunity to shoot with the beautiful Caitlyn Van Auken this last weekend. She holds the title of Mrs. American Dream Florida.  Mrs. Caitlyn Van AukenMrs. Caitlyn Van AukenMrs. Florida American Dream 2015 Caitlyn will be competing for the national title this August when she goes to Jacksonville for the National Mrs. American Dream pageant.

She wanted new headshots to put in the pageant program so I helped her out. Caitlyn has a degree in marketing but is currently pursuing a bachelors degree in nursing through UCF.

I have never done beauty pageant images before, but it was a great opportunity to play with some lighting and practice skills that I learned in my workshop with Anthony Neste.

I used a white background, but I didn't want it so white that it totally blew out, I wanted to see just a few hints of the curtain material without lots of messy wrinkles. I think they came out pretty well.

I wish Caitlyn the best of luck in the upcoming competition.  Mrs. Caitlyn Van AukenMrs. Caitlyn Van AukenMrs Florida American Dream 2015

Working On New Art Series http://daryllabello.com/blog/2015/3/working-on-new-art-series It is has been a while since I have had a chance to post, but I have not been idle.

When I completed my MFA, I thought I would never want to touch Mylar again for a project. However, in January I decided to revisit one of the paths that I was experimenting with. I started a series of nudes as a potential path for my thesis but had to pick one direction or other and at the time I felt the self-reflection work was the better path to go down for academic reasons. The nude series was title Between: Form and Feeling and can be seen on the website here: http://daryllabello.com/p102559703

I am still interested in this path, so I have started the series up again and have begun to produce new work. Trying more experimental techniques (as well as the tried and true process that I originally used) such as multiple exposure and (heaven forbid) a non-black background. I am looking for volunteers so if you are interested please contact me, note, it does require nude or topless work, but I will accept both males and females of all body types and I always keep it tasteful.

Here is the first image to be shown from the new series... I can wait to see this printed on aluminum at a large size. Let me know what you think.
